Bex held the door open for Nyx. “All I had to do is take you shopping to get you to behave. Who would have thought it would be that easy?”

“I’m not an idiot. If it’s free, why not?” Nyx said, twirling once with her shopping bags.

“Shopping is fun, but to be fair, I do have most of my clothes custom-made.”

“Why?”

Bex almost answered, and then paused. “If we’re going to get along, I’ll tell you one of my secrets.” She leaned closer then whispered, “I harness energy from what I wear, be it dead or alive.” She shrugged her shoulders, “Obviously more when it’s still squirming.”

“Gee, that must be hard for you.” Nyx rolled her eyes.

Bex, unaware that Nyx was mocking her, continued, “You have no idea.”

They walked down Howard Street.

“I’m hungry. I had no idea shopping made you hungry.”

“I forgot to feed you. I’m terrible with pets, sorry.” She rummaged through her bag and found a frog’s dried leg. She held it up for Nyx.

“Nope.”

“I was going to eat this, but I’ll share it with you.” Bex shook her head and poured out several desiccated beetles covered in chocolate. “You owe me.”

“I don’t eat that crap.” Nyx shook her head and backed away, almost running into David, who walked behind them silently.

“Look, you’re evil, and honestly, I haven’t seen you at your worst. You seem like deep down you may have a heart. I loved shopping with you, but on second thought. I think I’m better off with my obnoxious sister. Can you just give me back to Jade?”

“What? After all I’ve done for you? You looked like a sewer rat, now look at you. I bought you a dozen dresses.”

Nyx kept walking, almost stumbling over her bags. “Okay, forget I said anything.” She shook her head.

The afternoon was almost over, and was turning into a glorious sunset. David trudged behind them carrying the motherlode of bags. Bex carried her new purse.

She stopped, swinging her purse and almost clobbering a passerby.

“Hey lady, watch out.”

She leaned towards him and hissed at him. She swung her bag in the air and gave him a bald patch behind his head. She smiled and then frowned when she looked at Nyx. “You want me to give you back to Jade? That shows no strategy on your part. Besides, my feelings are hurt. I thought we bonded. I haven’t had a pet in so long.”

“What about me?” David asked, finally speaking.

“You’re much more than a pet,” she caressed his arm. She kept her gaze on Nyx and tilted her head. “I’ll give you back if Jade gives me something that’s just as valuable as losing my pet.”

“I shouldn’t ask, but what?” Nyx said.

“Her powers. I’m not able to kill her right now because of some ridiculous law that the Order has created; it’s just nonsense really, but I can take her power,” Bex arched an eyebrow and smiled. She softened her tone and continued. “We’ll see what your sister decides to do, won’t we.”

“I might be living with you for longer that I thought.
